APTONOTH
A common, herbivorous monster species, Aptonoths can be found almost anywhere, save for particularly cold regions. They are easily identified by their black-striped gray hides, large crests adorning their heads, and spiked tails. Like many herbivores, they typically travel in herds of three. Seen as easy prey to large monsters, and are often killed for their meat by Hunters. They are typically very docile, and flee when one of their herd is attacked - though the alpha male will tend to fight back. The Guild has domesticated some of the species, using them as beasts of burden, a duty in which they have been greatly helpful. POPO
Popos are rather similar to Aptonoth in behavior and structure, though they are adapted to cold climates. Their bodies are covered in a thick layer of gray-brown fur, and have evolved large, curved tusks as defenses. A common food source to tundra predators, such as Barioth or the occasional Deviljho. While Hunters will take them down for their meat, their tongues are considered a delicacy, strangely enough. KELBI
Kelbi are very small herbivores, covered in short green or blue spotted fur. They have a set of horns atop their head, which are highly valued for medicinal purposes. Incredibly timid and easily excitable, they leap very skillfully around an area, trilling with noise often, though an open flame will often seem to mesmerize them. It has been recorded that claiming their horns is a far easier task while the Kelbi is still alive, so a wise Hunter would do well to stun them. In particular, they are the favorite prey of Nargacuga. ANTEKA
The Anteka are a species that likely evolved from a common ancestor of Kelbi as the Popo from the Aptonoth. Coincidentally, they too have best suited themselves to cold weather by means of heavy fur. Unlike most Kelbi, however, the Anteka are incredibly territorial by nature, and will charge headlong at intruders, using their large antlers to attack. Much of what can be harvested from these creatures is held in value, and it is for these materials that they are hunted. RHENOPLOS
Rhenoplos are large herbivores, not overly dissimilar from Aptonoth. Unlike Aptonoths, though, these brutes are incredibly aggressive, and will charge Hunters on sight, slamming into them with their thick, plated skull crests. Lower-grade weapons are useless if attacking from the front, so be careful around these! Rhenoplos are able to be tricked into charging environmental structures, which will daze them momentarily, as it is difficult for them to slow down. Beware when attempting to make off with some of their eggs - they will not take such thievery lightly! They are well-suited to hotter environments, taking to the desert and volcano regions, though they seem to dwell underground when inactive. Rhenoplos are the favorite food of Agnaktors, who can tear their hide easily with their razor beaks. APCEROS
Apceros are remarkably similar to Rhenoplos - possibly even more similar to them than Aptonoths, though their reddish-brown color differs from both. They are also rather evolved to deal with predators, with thick plating covering much of their heads and backs. Their tails are also similar to those of the Rhenoplos, only with large, considerably more dangerous-looking spikes protruding from them. However, their bodies are not suited for charging, so they instead shuffle towards intruders, delivering headbutts and smacks with their tails. They, too, are quite protective of their eggs, and will not hesitate to strike at Hunters hauling them. Apceros typically inhabit the same hotter environments as their cousins. VESPOID
The Vespoids are horrible, small, insect-like monsters. They fly about any area they inhabit, and are generally quite hostile towards Hunters. The rapid beating of their wings causes a loud, irritating buzzing sound, giving any around them definite knowledge of their presence. One quality in particular makes them stand out from many other minion-class monsters is their rather frustrating stinger, which boasts a potent toxin that is capable of completely paralyzing any Hunter stung by it. Vespoids and other Neopterons have a rather fragile exoskeleton, however, and killing them by traditional means will often shatter the carcass completely. Poisoning them, however, has been found to be a surefire way of causing them to fall to the ground intact. -- QUEEN VESPOID
The Queen Vespoid is a rare sight, indeed. She is the 'leader' of a hive of Vespoids, if their base sentience has such an organization. She is also the mother of the majority of a hive, and is considerably larger than any other of their kind. Unlike their nasty, smaller relatives, the Queens are considered quite beautiful with their great multicolored wings and ruby-like object adorning their head. Instead of paralytic toxin in her stinger, she packs a horrible spray, lowering the defensive abilities of a Hunter along with filling regular Vespoids with renewed vigor and aggression. They do not often show themselves, and they must be coaxed out by killing a number of Vespoids when one must be slain, but be prepared for a fight, as it will be one to the death for the Queen. HORNETAUR
Hornetaurs are rather skittish little Neopterons, and terrestrial cousins of the Vespoids. While they do have wings, they do not often choose to fly, instead using them as boosts to their jumping attacks. Upon observation, it is of note that they look rather similar to insects used as common fishing bait, crickets - save for the horns at their front. If left alone, they do not always attack a Hunter, but they can become hard to keep track of in the heat of battle. As mentioned before, the exoskeletons that protect the innards of Hornetaurs and similar beasts are rather delicate, and will shatter under traditional assault - best to use poison if you wish to profit from exterminating a group! ALTAROTH
The Altaroths are much akin to Hornetaurs in that they are land-dwelling - however, there is a deal different, as well. Altaroths have completely lost their wings in evolution, but instead have gained a large, expandable sac on their back, used to store food. They have very select tastes, and much can be gained from allowing them to eat at a patch of mushrooms or a group of seeds before killing them. Once they've eaten, however, Hunters must be quick to take them out - they put on speed to return to their nest, and even more so if under assault. If attacked without eating, they will attack the offender, biting and shooting a foul liquid from their abdomens that lowers defensive capabilities. Larger ones are considerably more hostile than smaller ones, and will attack Hunters on sight. On many occasions, Altaroths have been observed climbing vines and rough rock walls - an interesting feat, for certain. With these beasts, as with others, remember that poison is the key. BNAHABRA
Yet another horrid Neopteron, Bnahabras are incredibly close cousins of the Vespoids, albeit with a few differences. These insect-like monsters have a much broader head, for instance, with a rather bright pink coloration adorning it. Furthermore, there seems to be some genetic differences of the species between regions - particularly in wing color. Along with the paralytic toxin they inherited from their Vespoid relatives, they also gained the ability to shoot liquid from their stingers, lowering resistance Hunters might have to Fire, Water, or Thunder, depending on the region the Bnahabra resides in. Also of note, the species is absolutely fascinated by fire, drawing in close to any source of open flame. Yet again, however, poison is the best way to dispose of these pests and gain something from doing so. GREAT THUNDERBUG
In truth, these particular Neopterons were quite a mystery to the Guild for a while. They appear as blue spheres of light - turning red and white when on the offense - and are around the size of a typical Vespoid. However, they are actually groups of Thunderbugs swarming around each other, apparently gaining something of a hive mind in doing so. Due to their rather electric nature, being struck by one of them will often cause paralysis, so use caution, Hunters. It was theorized that the Elder Dragon known as Yama Tsukami was something of a host - perhaps a breeding ground for them, however that cannot be guaranteed, particularly since reports have noted that those that reside within the body of the Yama Tsukami can explode. Unlike the others of this particular classification, poisoning Great Thunderbugs accomplishes nothing beyond what killing them traditionally might. FELYNE
These Lynians are not at all dissimilar from those that all too often join Hunters on quests, help around villages, cook, clean, etc. However, the ones in question here are not quite as human-friendly. For more information on that variety, see the section on Felynes in the Monster Hunters section of these notes. The Felynes in question here prefer to stay away from civilization, joining in with more of their own species, forming their own sort of culture. Generally, if a Hunter enters their territory, they will continue to go about their business foraging or whatever their activity had been. However, if attacked, they will not hesitate to go after a Hunter, using their melee weaponry and bombs. Also of note, the absolutely adore the scent of Felvine, and will chase it relentlessly when any amount is present. Furthermore, open flame will attract them as well, in fact causing them to dance around the source. MELYNX
Melynx are close cousins of Felynes, though they are often darker in color - particularly black. Melynx in humanoid civilizations are more or less identical to Felynes in that respect, as well. However, it is in the wild where the major difference is visible. Melynx are rather prone to thievery, as it happens, and love to go after Hunters when they enter their territory. Once they have managed to wrestle an item away from a Hunter, they will race a little distance away and burrow underground, gleeful with the acquisition of their treasure. If defeated before they can completely escape, the item can be retrieved then and there. However, an alternate method of getting them back exists - Melynx always take whatever they steal to a sort of 'shrine' in each area. Investigating it will yield a Hunter's stolen goods. They react similarly to Felynes to both Felvine and open flame. Also of note, they will not display any aggression if a Hunter is in one of their villages with them. SHAKALAKA
Though they do not look it, Shakalakas are also of the Lynian classification, though they only resemble Felynes and Melynx in stature and structure. Shakalakas are primarily identified by their large, orange masks they admire so much. They are vicious, dreadful little creatures, incredibly prone to violence and in fact seek it out. They like to wait in hiding under a disguise of an environmental piece, waiting for an unsuspecting Hunter to get close before leaping out and carving into them with their large weapons. It would be unwise to underestimate them due to their size; even one can bring an experienced Hunter low, using not only their broad blades, but also poison, Bounce Bombs, and Sleep Bombs. They are also quite devious, occasionally disguising an explosive as a point of interest. There is no data on the true face of a Shakalaka, due to how quickly they burrow when injured too greatly. There has only been one case of a friendly member of this species, reported from the Guild Liaison on the Deserted Island. -- KING SHAKALAKA
A leader of a tribe of Shakalakas, the King Shakalaka portrays himself as such beyond a shadow of a doubt. In place of the blades the run-of-the-mill members use, he wields a large club, and the top of his mask is adorned with a BBQ Spit, presumably obtained by a slain Hunter. If it wasn't readily apparent, these are an absolute force of nature, each of their blows packing a real wallop. They are able to enter a frenzied state akin to the Rage mode of large monsters in which the fire atop their masks roars with ferocity and launches potent fireballs at Hunters. Approach only with extreme caution taken into mind. GIGGI
The Giggi are small, gray, worm-like monsters, and well-known to be the offspring of the much larger Gigginox, a poisonous pseudowyvern. They are best suited to dark, damp locations, presumably using sensory organs to detect heat, as they have no eyes. They can often be seen clinging to ceilings or walls, ready to leap out at a moment's notice to feed off their unwary prey. Once they have a target, they always leap towards it, attempting to latch onto it and drain blood from them as food. Take care, dear Hunter! For once they have eaten their fill, they become a deal larger, and something triggers within them to allow these beasts to spit poison, akin to their parents. VELOCIPREY
One of the numerous Bird Wyvern minion-class monsters, the Velociprey is marked for its deep blue scales striped with black, and the reddish crest adorning their heads. They hunt in small packs, and generally seeing them can mean that a Velocidrome is near. These aggressive little beasts jump wildly around an area to take down anything they don't care to share it with - including large monsters such as Rathian! Several Hunters have claimed that if you manage to deal a killing blow on a member of the Bird Wyvern family while they are in mid-air, their bodies are completely torn asunder. This has been dismissed largely as nonsense by the Guild, as interesting a phenomenon it might be. GIAPREY
An incredibly close cousin of the Velociprey, the Giaprey are one of the more habitat-specific Bird Wyverns, adapted to much colder climates. Their scales and stripes are a much lighter blue to better fit their snowy environments, though they share their red crests. They are noticeably tougher than Velociprey, both in offense and defense. Furthermore, they pack a particularly icy spit, capable of chilling even the hardiest Hunters to the bone, so be sure to dress warmly! GENPREY
The Genprey are commonly seen as the most disliked of the Bird Wyverns, though they are not quite the strongest. Inhabiting desert locations, their scales are rather attractive greens and yellows, with twin yellow crests on their heads, shading their eyes to some degree from the harsh desert sun. They also possess long front fangs - a coveted resource for making Shock Traps. Of course, while still attached to a living Genprey, they put them to use by injecting targets with a potent paralyzing toxin, bringing down both prey and Hunters alike. IOPREY
The Ioprey are incredibly interesting, seeing how different they are from their Velociprey cousins. Foremost, they can be identified from their red-orange hides spotted with black and very rounded crests atop their skulls. It is also of note that a recent discovery proved that they require some form of moisture, to wet their hides. It is no surprise, therefore, that they tend to live in the Jungle and Flooded Forest, but it is curious that they are found often in the Volcanic Belt and the Great Forest. Living in such harsh areas, of course, has hardened the species, making them considerably physically powerful. They also have the ability to produce a poisonous spit, very easily capable of bringing low a Hunter who has forgotten Antidotes. JAGGI

The Carapaceons provide a stark contrast to the other large monsters that inhabit Northguard. They are no typical four- or two-legged vertebrates; instead, they make sure defense is their best offense with incredibly tough exoskeletons. DAIMYO HERMITAUR

For the most part, the world of Monster Hunter is filled with scaly, reptilian beasts. There are a few exceptions to this standard, however, and most of them fit into the Pelagus class of monster. Pelagus monsters all mover very quickly without the use of wings, and vary in difficulty. CONGALALA
